Seems that in all the excitement of rebranding that Citrix has dropped the Netscaler Application Gateway product from their portfolio.
The reaons for this is to reduce the slightly confusing product portfolio that Netscaler offered. Citrix resellers are a simple bunch and the prospect of having to sell 5 boxes in total was just too much for them!
But joking aside, Netscaler used to offer 3 boxes, 2 of which were the same:
- Application Accelerator (1 u box)
- Application Gateway (2 u box)
- Application Switch (2 u box)
The Gateway and Switch are the same appliance, simply with different modules on them, so to simplify things you can now buy one of two hardware platforms, and depending on which one you can then bolt-n the relevant modules (load blanacing, caching, compression, etc...)
Also this should pave the way to see the Citrix Access Gateway (and Application Gateway) migrated to the same hardware platform as the Citrix Netscaler boxes away from Superchips. Just from consolidation of suppliers it makes sense, plus the Netscaler boxes are quieter than the CAG's. Indeed, this would also allow Citrix to have a consistent look and feel to their devices when installed in a rack (why not a big glowing Citrix badge similar to the f5 badge on their appliances?).
Then all we need to see is the Access Essentials appliance and its all done and dusted!
