I recently had a similar issue during the "server configuration" portion of the a new install.  My issue ended up being related to permissions issues.  What I had to so was start from scratch and make sure the service account I was planning to use was pre-configured to be a local admin on the AAC machine.  Since I am using a separate SQL machine I also made sure that the AAC service account had appropriate rights on the SQL box  to create databases, etc.

If this does not correct your issue could you provide any event log messages that get spawned from the server config failure?
