Looking for a Two Factor soultion for our SSL VPN, We are evaluating AG 4.X Appliance soon
as a SSL VPN Solution, What is the best out of the above two (any other sugestions).

We are getting an eval of the SecureID Appliance as well but I am not sure if this is really the best
solution, We may want a solution that is expandiable to cope with internal Smartcard Login as well
so a citrix only product may not be all that we need.

I like the idear if the USB keys with both One Time Passwords and the ability to store Certificates and have a any
software thet runns from the key and leaves no footprint on the client.

Thanks

Hi Alan,

The RSA SecurID appliance is not a Citrix only solution and will offer you the full benefits of running a RSA ACE authentication server on your network.  The only reason that you would not want to use the appliance is if your user base will increase above the appliance's supported numbers (currently 250, soon to be increased to 350).

With regards to RSA Vs SafeWord, there are lots of arguments out there but here is my two penneth:

More applications support RSA natively although Safeword can be configured to support a lot of applications using RADIUS.  RSA is the bear, it has the lions share of the market for two factor authentication and you know that it will be around and continuously developed for the foreseeable future.  However RSA is more expensive, tokens will need replacing every 3 or so years (depending on the token type that you purchase up front).  SafeWord on the other hand will guarantee the lifetime of their tokens.

If you do not want a Citrix only solution then SafeWord for Citrix is not an option and you will need to look at SafeWord PremierAccess which will offer more in the way of smart card and digital certificate support.

So in summary if you need to do this 'on the cheap' then use SafeWord for Citrix.  If you want maximum compatibility with other systems beside Citrix and are willing to spend a little extra then use RSA SecurID.  If you need smart card and digital certificate support then you need to decide what you will be using technically before carrying out a technical comparison of SafeWord PremierAccess and the smart card authentication solutions available from RSA.

No easy answer but hopefully this helps?

Tim

Don't forget the 2 small things that drive me crazy with safeword.

  1. They use Hex instead of decimal so I can't just 10-key in my code
  2. Are the REALLY saving that much battery with the button you have to press to show the code?

Of course the other item that helps RSA's case that most people don't think about are the soft-tokens. You can get a soft-token for palm, CE, symbian, Java (I think), windows, and I think 1 or 2 other platforms. I use this whenever I get a customer who says the users will just leave them around. Just load them on their Cell Phones!

Hi there

With Safeword vs. RSA on token life I understand that its less to do with the button press to generate a number than it is to do with RSA hard coding an expiry date into the token, which is why it was possible to buy them with different timespans.

Thanks
